David Smolka

Career Overview

David Smolka competed in the NBBA from 1987 through 2007, with additional World Series appearances in 2015, 2017 to 2018, and 2021. Over 18 World Series competitions, he established himself as one of the most consistent offensive threats of his era while also serving as a versatile defender and respected leader.

He began his career with Chicago Insight in 1987 and 1991, played for the Chicago Bluffs from 1988 to 1990, the Windy City Hoosiers in 1993, and was a cofounder and longtime member of the Chicago Fastar Comets, later renamed the Chicago Comets, from 1998 through 2007, returning again in 2015 and 2017 to 2018. He also competed with the USA Legends in 2021.

Dave entered the sport alongside his brothers John and Joe, known around the league as Lightning and Breeze. Together they became known as Thunder, Breeze, and Lightning. Dave earned the nickname Thunder for his powerful bat.

Championship Impact

Dave was a member of the Chicago Bluffs teams that finished second at the World Series in 1988 and 1990.

With the Comets from 1998 through 2007, he contributed to a 2003 NBBA Championship and four third place finishes.

From 1999 through 2003, during an era when many elite hitters batted .650 to .700, Dave produced five consecutive World Series performances batting .500 or better.

Across 90 documented World Series games, Dave compiled 355 at bats, 171 runs, 35 strikeouts, 81 putouts, and a career .482 batting average.
