Bill Gibney

Career Overview

William Gibney was a pioneer of modern beep baseball. A co-founder of the National Beep Baseball Association and its first president from 1976 to 1978, he helped transform the game from a recreational activity into a structured, competitive national sport. Inducted into the NBBA Hall of Fame in 1999, Gibney’s influence reaches back to the very foundation of the league.

Beginning his playing career in 1976, Gibney competed with the Phoenix Thunderbirds, Phoenix Firebirds, and most notably the Phoenix Outlaws, appearing in approximately ten World Series tournaments through the mid 1990s.

Founding the NBBA

In 1976, working alongside John Ross of Minneapolis and supported by organizations such as the Telephone Pioneers and Lions Clubs, Gibney helped reorganize and modernize the sport’s rules. That same year, the NBBA was officially formed and the first World Series of Beep Baseball was organized in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Gibney served as the league’s first president and played a central role in establishing the competitive structure that continues to define the sport today.

One of his most memorable performances came during the 1978 World Series in Phoenix. Facing a 15 to 3 deficit against Minneapolis and with the twelve run rule invoked, Phoenix mounted a dramatic comeback to win 18 to 15. During the rally, Gibney recorded twelve consecutive putouts, shutting down Minneapolis and preserving one of the tournament’s most remarkable victories.

Legacy

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Gibney was instrumental in shaping the identity and direction of the NBBA. Influenced by leaders such as Carl Swenson, Jim Quinn, John Ross, and Allen Woody, he helped lay the groundwork for the rules and organizational structure still used today.
