Sal Guzman

Career Overview

Sal Guzman competed in the NBBA from 1981 through 1996 and was a central figure in some of the league’s most successful teams of the 1980s and 1990s.

He played for the Dallas Bandits from 1981 to 1986, the Austin Blackhawks in 1987 to 1988, 1990, and 1992 to 1996, and the Fort Worth Roadrunners in 1989 and 1991.

Along with his brother Johnny Guzman and half brother Joe Maranga, Sal helped form the core of the Dallas Bandits during their competitive run from 1980 through 1986.

Early Success with the Dallas Bandits

Prior to 1982, teams were required to win a local or state qualifying tournament or be selected as one of two at large teams to earn a place in the eight team World Series field.

In 1981, the Dallas Bandits won the Texas State Regional to qualify for the World Series in Houston. The Bandits advanced to the championship game and narrowly lost to the Albuquerque Tru Sight 32 to 31 to finish second.

Sal was named Tournament MVP in 1981, while Johnny Guzman and Joe Maranga were selected to the All Tournament Team. Dallas also competed in the 1984 World Series.

Championship Impact

Sal played in six NBBA World Series Championship Games. His only loss in a title game came in 1981 with the Dallas Bandits.

With the Austin Blackhawks, Sal became a key contributor to one of the most dominant dynasties in league history. He was part of five NBBA World Championship teams from 1992 through 1996 during Austin’s seven consecutive title run.

In 1996, Sal was named World Series Defensive MVP, further highlighting his importance to the Blackhawks’ success.

Beep baseball was a family tradition for Sal. NBBA Hall of Famer Lupe Perez, inducted in 2011, is his nephew.

Sal was also named to the NBBA All Time Anniversary Team covering 1976 through 2006, further cementing his place among the league’s elite players.

His career combined early era excellence with championship dominance during the Blackhawks dynasty, making Sal Guzman one of the defining players of his generation.
