How a play works on the field
The pitcher delivers an audible ball to a blindfolded batter. After the batter hits a fair ball, one of two buzzing bases is activated. The batter runs toward that base while the defense listens for the ball and tries to control it.
The batter scores a run by reaching the activated base before a defender controls the ball. The defense records a putout when a defender controls the ball first. Beep baseball does not use baserunners moving from base to base, so each at-bat produces its own run, out, or continuing pitch count.
Common calls the scorekeeper records
- Run: the batter reaches the activated base before the defense completes the play.
- Putout: a defender controls the ball before the batter reaches the activated base.
- Strikeout: the batter reaches the fourth strike in the standard game.
- Pass: the first legal pitch the batter does not swing at is recorded as the permitted pass.
- Foul ball: record the foul in the pitch tracker; the scorecard applies its effect on the strike count.
- Dead Ball / No Pitch: record the umpire’s ruling without changing the count, outs, or batting order.
The umpire makes the ruling. The scorekeeper records that ruling accurately and confirms the correct batter, pitcher, defender, and defensive zone when required.
